Based in Cambridge, UK, Sophisticated Games is an international board game developer and publishing house, specialising in literary brands. It started up in 1998 publishing a game adaptation of Jostein Gaarder’s international bestselling novel, Sophie’s World. Most recently it has published a very successful card game based on Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris’s The Lost Words.

The company develops and packages all non-movie The Lord of the Rings™ games under license from Middle-earth Enterprises, and has published many titles in this area: Reiner Knizia’s The Lord of the Rings™, The Hobbit™ and the award winning War of the Ring™ series in conjunction with Ares in Italy. Sophisticated Games has recently entered into a partnership with Friligan in Sweden to bring out new editions of their Role Playing Games.

The company has also published four The Lord of the Rings™ and The Hobbit™ jigsaws, featuring the art of John Howe and Ted Nasmith, two long-time collaborators on board games with the company, and probably the most renowned Tolkien artists in the world.
